About this deal

I'm looking to round out my kit for travel / landscape with a 70-200 and right now my only native z option is the f2. The Nikon 70-200mm f/4G VR did really well in such an environment and most of the shots turned out to be in perfect focus.

However, the results didn’t change, and after examining the corner crops as well, I concluded that field curvature could be the culprit for this behaviour. I think Nikon didn't start all that well with the focusing of F mount lenses with the first Z cameras and many F-mount lenses tend to jitter when focusing in lower light. It is slightly bulky, but the depth from the front of the lens to the back of the camera is the same as a DSLR. DPReview readers have spoken: after two rounds of voting, it's time to announce the winner of our 2023 Reader's Choice Product of the Year award, along with a couple of honorable mentions. It's way sharper across the entire frame even wide open than it should be for the money; it punches in well above its weight class.

I chalk such things up to slight variations in sensor filtration thickness coupled with the optical design. At like openings (f/13), both are indeed sharp, and I can't tell a lot of difference in either lens with either camera. VR II was a disappointment for some photographers, because it suffers from a “lens breathing” optical design, where the focal length of the lens varies depending on subject distance. and only hits 200mm at infinity is an issue; you don’t get the magnification you expect and this hinders one’s ability to previsualize compositions. I was testing some lights and the room was too bright for what I was doing, so we turned off all the lights and blocked the windows to have the least amount of ambient light in the room. It doesn’t extend when focusing or zooming, it’s weather sealed, equipped with a silent wave motor, and the latest generation of Nikon’s vibration reduction system – supposedly good for up to four stops.

even with portraits as with the excellent image of Amadou, this new 70-200 f4 VR is going to be an awesome lens. Likewise, edge of day in the wilds can force you to push your ISO values up because f/4 just isn’t going to hold high shutter speeds at dawn or dusk.Although this can't do anything about subject movement, it should greatly expand the usability of the lens in marginal lighting conditions. At 200mm wide-open, this VR lens is a bit sharper under the microscope, while though the rest of the range they are the same, and sometimes the 80-200/4 AI-s is sharper. Overall, I’d tend to say the 70-200mm f/4G is very good on the high resolution bodies such as the D810, and excellent on the high resolution DX bodies. It’s not a big deal if you use the nearest focus point, but if you’re focusing and recomposing, you may see some softness and wonder why since most telephotos generally don’t suffer from this. Though it will depend on your personal circumstances/working practices, I personally always find myself working nearer the 200mm end of my 70-200mm F/2.

The only advantage to the older 70-200mm VR II over this new f/4 lens is one-stop of speed for catching action in low light, and the ability to blur backgrounds just a little bit more at f/2.The TC-20E III turned out to be a much better teleconverter than the old TC-20E II, which only seemed to work well with a couple of high-end super telephoto lenses. We're hoping to review this lens in early 2013, but until then, here's a preview real-world samples gallery. No it is not perfect, but it is an impressive performer, significantly better than say the F-mount 24-120 VR. Everything else is good, though: resolving power is excellent even wide open; I’d say every aperture is usable everywhere in the frame, even on the D800E. which gives up a stop but adds 50% more reach, and in the case of the modern 70-300s, similar image quality.
