About this deal

What I cannot understand is people writing this book off because they do not agree with the politics in it. I know exactly how all the women in the book look – be it his mother, love interest, money lender or peer – which would be fine if Rothfuss helped me to picture what the men looked like with as much clarity.

Almost instantaneously after the press conference his social faux pas is trending number one on twitter. However to suggest that all identity and gender politics are that way, or that we shouldn't bother to respect people's choices, or that there isn't a problematic trend of the patriachy talking over women and of white people talking over people of colour would be disingenuous. The problem is, I just can't work out quite what it's trying to satirise, and therefore if I think the satirisation of that issue is something I can or cannot get behind. So they decide to ramp up the tension by turning the non-straight non-binary nons- against the heterosexual white couple. Sure, in the retelling of his story, Kvothe is 15 years old and bound to be obsessed with women but I was pretty bored by the many references to “her breasts pressing against my arm.A series of apparently random murders draws amiable, old-school Detective Mick Matlock into a world of sex, politics, reality TV and a bewildering kaleidoscope of opposing identity groups. Elton has his finger firmly on the zeitgeist of the times as he has his dig at Harvey Weinstein, interfering in political elections from foreign powers, political correctness, ultra-feminism, social media, immigration, fake news, Brexit. I disagree with others who say that Kvothe is a dislikeable character because he excels at everything (acting, music, magic, academic studies) and lacks flaws. I think we can all agree that Social Media has a place in modern life, even if only by virtue of it's ubiquitousness. There are people who want to get offended about everything and anything, people who leave no room for honest mistakes or who see evil in everyone - spaces where simply existing as a cis, straight white person is enough to have you villified even if you try your hardest to be respectful.

It’s only in writing this now that I come to appreciate how great a job the author did in writing this book.

I listened to this as an audiobook read by the author, and laughed aloud more than once walking along.
